Friday Sturgeon Bay Police Association Calendar Winner!

This past weeks Sturgeon Bay Police Association Calendar Winner was George Draeb of Sturgeon Bay.  Congrats George on winning $50.00.

Officers Respond To Missing Person Complaint


On Wednesday March 28, 2012 at 11:40 AM, Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of 11th Place. Upon arrival Officers met with the complainant who stated his wife who has medical issues was missing from the home and he didn't know where she had went.  Officers immediately began searching the surrounding area. The Sturgeon Bay Fire Department was also called to assist in searching for the female. About 20 minutes later Officers were notified that the female had been found asleep in the basement where she usually never goes.

Congratulations to Officer Wiegand!


The Sturgeon Bay Police Department is proud to announce Officer Michelle Wiegand as one of its newest Officers.  Officer Wiegand was selected from an applicant pool of over 150 candidates.  Officer Wiegand has already started a rigorious16 week field training program and looks forward to getting out on her own.  Prior to becoming a Police Officer with the City of Sturgeon Bay, Officer Wiegand worked as a Community Service Officer.

Officers Respond To Dumpster Fire At Autozone!


On March 25, 2012 at 4:30 PM, Officers were dispatched to AutoZone for a dumpster fire. Upon arrival Officers found a fire in the cardboard dumpster next to the building.  The Sturgeon Bay Fire Department arrived shortly after and put the fire out.  The fire could be seen from about 3 blocks away.  It was determined an employee had accidentally put coals used during a cook out in the dumpster next to the building. Luckily no one was injured and there was no damage to AutoZone.

Officers Investigate Stolen Mail!


On March 27, 2012 at 11 AM, Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of 5th Ave. Upon arrival Officers made contact with the complainant who stated he had ordered 40 one dollar silver coins off of eBay and had found that the items were never received. The tracking information provided by the US Post Office indicated the package was delivered sometime on March 6, 2012. Officers continue to investigate the matter and would like the public to contact the Police Department if they saw anyone acting suspicious in the area during that time.

Officers Arrest Sturgeon Bay Women Again For Panhandling.


On Monday, March 26, 2012 at 3:18 PM, Officers arrested a 62 year old Sturgeon Bay women for panhandling at nearby businesses. This is one of numerous violations within the last few weeks.  Earlier in the week Officers arrested the female for lewd behavior at a local bar. Officers transported the female to jail where she was incarcerated on Disorderly Conduct and an Outstanding Warrant For Failure To Appear.

31Yr Old Sturgeon Bay Man Arrested For 4th Offense OWI!


On Monday, March 26, 2012 at 1:49 PM, Officers observed a black pick up truck squeal its tires from a stop sign on Kentucky Street downtown. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle finding that the driver had been drinking. The driver was asked to conduct field sobriety tests, which he did do. The driver was arrested for Operating with a Prohibitive Alcohol Concentration (PAC).  The driver a 31 year old Sturgeon Bay man was transported to the Door County Jail where he was incarcerated on the Prohibitive Alcohol Concentration (PAC) violation.

Reckless Driver Cited By Officers, Passenger Arrested.


On Sunday March 25, 2012 at 10:59 PM, Officers were dispatched to the Taco Bell for a reckless driver.  The complainant stated the driver was all over the roadway and driving at a fast rate of speed. Officers observed the suspect vehicle traveling on the highway as they approached Taco Bell. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The Officers ended up citing the driver for violating his probationary license. The passenger was arrested for Bail jumping due to having contact with the driver, which violated his bond conditions.

Officers Respond To Fight Downtown.


On Saturday March 24, 2012 at 2:30 AM, Officers on patrol of the downtown area observed a fight in progress in the 200 block of North Third Avenue. Upon arrival Officers defused the situation and separated the individuals involved. Officers determined the fight started between three males over a race issue. The three males who were intoxicated were warned by Officers and sent on their way home for the night.

[Update] Officers Cite Two Sturgeon Bay Men For Assault In Sunset Park


[Update] Over the weekend an 18 year old Sturgeon Bay man was arrested for putting a knife to one of the males throats during the fight at Sunset Park. The 18 year old Sturgeon Bay man is currently incarcerated at the Door County Jail on a Probation Hold. During the arrest of the above male Officers recovered Drug Paraphernalia and cited the 19 year old driver of the vehicle the 18 year old was found in.  Officers continue to investigate the altercation and plan on more arrests coming from it.

Officers Cite Two Sturgeon Bay Men For Assault In Sunset Park


On March 22, 2012 at 9:40 PM, Officers were dispatched to Sunset Park for an Assault.  Upon arrival Officers determined that a car full of adults and juveniles had pulled in behind another vehicle with two males inside. A confrontation occurred between the occupants of both vehicles leaving one male injured.  Officers later made a traffic stop on the other vehicle involved and cited one of the males who was primarily involved in the assault.  The male who was injured refused medical care for his injuries.

30 Yr Old Sturgeon Bay Man Arrested For OWI After Altercation


On March 21, 2012 at 12:50 AM, Officers working the east side of Sturgeon Bay observed a female running from Econo Foods and into the roadway in front of a mini van. Officers observed the mini van nearly strike the female.  The female then attempted to gain entry into the van, but was unable to as the driver sped off past Officers. Officers briefly spoke to the female finding that an altercation had occurred between her boyfriend the driver and herself. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle after it had hid in the Cherry Point Mall parking lot.  Officers determined a verbal altercation had occurred between the driver and the female. While talking with the driver Officers detected an odor of alcoholic beverages coming from his mouth.  Field sobriety tests were conducted, which the driver failed. The 30 year old Sturgeon Bay man was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) and a Probation Hold. The female was given a ride home by friends. The 30 year old Sturgeon Bay man remains in the Door County Jail.

Phone Scam Alert-5.5 Million Dollar Scam!


On March 21, 2012 at 9 AM, Officers were dispatched to residence in the 1500 block of Huron Court. Upon arrival Officers were told by the complainant that she had been receiving calls from 702-722-3083 claiming she had one 5.5 million dollars and they would be right over to deliver it to her. The complainant states the caller asked her to call them back at the above phone number. Officers advised the complainant that this was a scam and to contact Police if anyone showed up at her door that she didn't know.

Louisiana and Kentucky Streets Going Two Way On Thursday!


This Thursday, March 22, 2012, Louisiana and Kentucky Streets will both become two way streets downtown Sturgeon Bay. Within the next day or two city crews will install proper signage.  The signage will remain until people become familiar with the new traffic flow. 

Reminder: Bayview Bridge Closed For Cleaning Today 9AM To 2PM!


Just a reminder that the Bayview Bridge in Sturgeon Bay will be closed from 9 AM to 2 PM today. While closed the bridge will be cleaned and maintenance will be done to it.  During this closure, traffic will be detoured on Green Bay Road, Madison Ave. and Michigan Street.

[Updated Vehicle Info] BB Gun Incidents! -Reward Offered!



Recently Officers working the Witt Ford Investigation have found that the vehicle used during the BB Gun Damage there was a white Dodge or Chrysler product with the rear passenger side hub cab off. Video evidence revealed three males inside the vehicle during the damage.  Officers are continuing to sift through evidence to obtain further information on the vehicle and suspects.

Possible Burglary Thwarted By Officers Conducting Property Checks!


On Monday, March 19, 2012 at 1 AM, Officers working on the west side of Sturgeon Bay were contacted by a witness who had observed two males dressed in black running east behind Cellcom towards the old Coop building. Officers who were in the area conducting property checks on businesses, checked the area on foot, but were unable to locate the suspects. Officers remind business owners and homeowners to keep vehicles and buildings locked. When possible turn interior or exterior lights on. Officers have found during some of the most recent burglaries nearby citizens have heard abnormal sounds, but failed to contact Police. Officers urge citizens to contact Police with anything suspicious going on in there neighborhood.  With your assistance we can catch these individual(s) responsible for committing these crimes in our community.

Sturgeon Bay Man Arrested On Charges Of Theft At Target!


On Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 6:20 PM, Officers arrested a 21 year old Sturgeon Bay man on misdemeanor Theft after the 21 year old was observed on video taking items from the Target Store in Sturgeon Bay. Officers arrested the male and interviewed him. It was found that the male over a period of 2 years had stolen multiple items from Target. Some of those items were recovered at the time of the interview.  The 21 year old Sturgeon Bay man remains incarcerated on the Theft charge and a Probation Hold.

Pedestrian Accident Downtown Sends One To Hospital!


On Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 4:00 PM, Officers were dispatched to 3rd and Michigan Street for a car versus pedestrian accident. On arrival Officers found a male lying on the sidewalk with injuries to his head. After further investigation it was determined that the operator in the vehicle struck the juvenile on the skateboard who was traveling through the intersection at the time of the accident. The vehicle struck the juvenile causing the skateboarder to come off of the skateboard and to lose his helmet prior to striking the pavement. The injured juvenile was taken by Paramedics to Door County Medial Center for treatment of his injuries.  Officers continue to investigate the accident.

Officers would like to remind drivers to always look both ways when proceeding out from stop signs especially in high pedestrian areas.  Also it is against Sturgeon Bay City ordinance to travel anywhere downtown while using in line skates, skateboards, or bikes while on the sidewalk.

1 Arrested On Multiple Charges After Breaking Into Vehicle


On Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 12 AM, Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Louisiana Street for an unknown male who had entered into the complainants vehicle parked next to the residence without the complainants permission. Officers in the area were able to stop a male fitting the description given by the complainant. While talking with 30 year old Sturgeon Bay man he became uncooperative and refused to provide his identification or listen to the Officers commands. The 30 year old had to be physically restrained after the male attempted to walk away.  Once restrained the male continued to create a disturbance in public. The 30 year old Sturgeon Bay man was incarcerated at the Door County Jail on Disorderly Conduct, Theft, Resisting and Obstructing an Officer, and a Probation Hold

2 Sturgeon Bay Men Arrested After Fighting In Street!


On Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 7:30 PM, Officers were dispatched to the intersection of 1st Avenue and Michigan Street for two men fighting in the middle of the street. Prior to arrival Officers found that the two males had fled in vehicles. Officers who were in the area were able to make traffic stops on both vehicles. Officers determined that a fight had ensued after one of the males had confronted the other at the intersection over how slow the other driver was driving.  A 41 year old Sturgeon Bay man was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) 2nd Offense and Disorderly Conduct. The other male involved a 50 year old Sturgeon Bay man was arrested on Disorderly Conduct and a Probation Hold. Both men are currently incarcerated at the Door County Jail.

Officers Investigate Damage To Door County Fairgrounds


On Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 7 PM, Officers were dispatched to the Door County Fairgrounds for three Juveniles in the pit area.  On arrival Officers observed the juveniles and attempted to catch up to them as they fled from the location. The juveniles fled towards Alabama Street and were able to get away before Officers could apprehend them. During the incident it appeared that one of the juveniles was injured while climbing the exterior fencing of the park. 

Prior to today's incident Officers were dispatched to the same location for vehicles and buildings being vandalized. During one of the earlier incidents the juveniles had lit a fire inside one of the buildings causing extensive damage.

The Sturgeon Bay Police Department would like to remind everyone to set your clocks ahead an hour at 2 AM Sunday morning. While doing so make sure to check all of your households Smoke and CO2 detector batteries in order to make sure they are in working order.

Sturgeon Bay Police & Fire Department Honor Guard Team Attend Deputy Kampmeyers Funeral


Yesterday afternoon The Sturgeon Bay Police and Fire Department Honor Guard Team took part in Deputy Sheriff Jamison Kampmeyers funeral in Colby Wisconsin.  Last Sunday Deputy Sheriff Kampmeyer was working as a volunteer firefighter for the Colby Fire Department when he lost his life due to the roof of the Abby Theatre collapsing upon him and other volunteer firefighters.  The other fireman who were injured were treated and released from the local hospital. The fire at the Abby Theatre is still under investigation.

Reported Abduction Proves False!


On Tuesday March 6, 2012 at 4PM, Officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Superior Street for a reported abduction of a child. On arrival Officers interviewed an 11 yr old boy who stated the girl he was walking home with had been abducted by an unknown older lady. The 11 year old provided a suspect and vehicle description to Officers. Officers immediately began investigating the incident and obtained the girls name from teachers at Sturgeon Bay Middle School. Officers proceeded over to her residence and found that the girls grandmother had picked her up.  Officers are glad the situation ended with everyone being safe. Officers remind all parents to talk to your children and rehearse situations just like this.  The following are tips, which should be reminded to your children:

  1. Always TAKE A FRIEND with you when walking, biking, or standing at the bus stop. Make sure you know your bus number and which bus to ride.
  2. Say NO if anyone you don’t know or a person who makes you feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused offers a ride. Do NOT accept a ride from anyone unless I have told you it is OK to do so in each instance.
  3. Quickly get away and yell, “THIS PERSON IS NOT MY MOTHER/FATHER/GUARDIAN” if anyone tries to take you somewhere or is following you. If anyone tries to grab you, make a scene and every effort to get away by kicking, screaming, and resisting.
  4. NEVER LEAVE SCHOOL GROUNDS before the regular school day ends. Always check with the office before leaving school early.
  5. NEVER take shortcuts or walk through alleys to get to or from school faster. We will talk about which way to go to and from school. Remind me if activities you participate in cause you to leave earlier or arrive home later than usual. Remember to call me once you have arrived home.

North Dakota Man Investigated For Multiple Thefts From Area Businesses!


The 41 year old North Dakota man who was arrested this weekend for Theft and Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) 3rd Offense at Door County Hardware is being investigated for further charges of Theft from area businesses. On Sunday March 4, 2012 Officers conducted a interview of the mans wife at their residence. While doing so Officers found other stolen items from surrounding businesses. The 41 year old North Dakota Man remains in the Door County Jail on the above charges.

Officers Investigate Two Disturbances Downtown


On Sunday March 4, 2012 at 2:30 AM, Officers on patrol downtown noticed a fight in front of Vans Bar. Upon arrival Officers separated the individuals and diffused the situation. While on scene Officers overheard another disturbance going on inside the bar. Additional Officers escorted a 32 year old New York man from the bar who was intoxicated and was reluctant to leave.  The individuals involved received taxi rides home.

Officers Arrest North Dakota Man For Theft & OWI



On Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 1:30 PM, Officers were dispatched to theft at Door County Hardware. Upon arrival Officers arrested a 41 year old North Dakota man for Grand Theft and Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) 3rd Offense as the man drove to the store intoxicated. Officers transported the man to the Door County Jail where he was incarcerated on the charges of Grand Theft and OWI 3rd Offense.

Officers Assist SBFD On Vehicle Fire


On Saturday March 3, 2012 at 7:45 PM, Officers were dispatched to a vehicle fire at a residence in the 1900 block of Shiloh Road. Upon arrival Officers could hear gunshots going off from the vehicle, which was fully engulfed by flames. A short time later the Fire Department extinguished the flames. Due to the intense heat from the fire a nearby truck and garage were damaged. It is unknown as to what started the fire.  Luckily no one was injured as a result of the fire.

Officers Investigate Burglary To Residence



On Friday March 2, 2012 at 5:20 PM, Officers were dispatched to a Burglary to a residence in the 400 block of  Michigan Street.  Upon arrival Officers found the front door to the residence damaged due to someone kicking in the door to gain entry.  The complainant informed Officers she had left the residence for about an hour and when she returned she found the front door open.  Officers secured the residence and found that nothing had been taken.

Panhandler Arrested Again At Walmart!


On Friday,  March 2, 2012 at 2 PM, Officers were dispatched to Walmart for a complaint about the same female who was arrested a day prior for trespassing at Walmart. Upon arrival Officers were informed that the 62 year old female was once again harassing customers for money, cigarettes, and clothes. This time though the actions of the female were causing a disturbance.  The female a 62 year old Sturgeon Bay women was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct and issued a ordinance citation for Criminal Trespass To Dwelling.  The 62 year old Female was transported to the Door County Jail where she was incarcerated.

Officers Investigate Stolen Vehicle-Blk Nissan Sentra WI PC 562STS

On Friday March 2, 2012 at 12:15 PM, Officers were dispatched to a residence on Delaware Street for a stolen vehicle. The complainant stated sometime during the night after 2 AM her 1990 Black Nissan Sentra WI PC 562STS, with chrome rims was stolen from her driveway. The vehicle was left unlocked with the keys in the ignition.

Prior to Officers being dispatched to this call, Door County Sheriffs Deputies had recovered another stolen vehicle a block away from the complainants residence. This vehicle was stolen in the county north of the City of Sturgeon Bay last night.  Officers are asking the public to contact the Police Department at 920-746-2450 or call 911 if they observe the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle should be considered dangerous and shouldn't be approached.

Winter Storm Warning In Effect




All of Door County is under a Winter Storm Warning from now until 6AM Saturday morning.  We can expect 4 to 8 inches of snow this evening. Road conditions will get worse as the night goes on.  If you have to travel tonight please take extra precautions when out driving. Remember for city residents the winter parking ban is still in effect from 2 AM to 6 AM.

Female Arrested For Panhandling At Walmart!


On Wednesday February 29, 2012 at 3:45 PM, Officers were dispatched to Walmart for a complaint about a female who had been harassing customers for money, cigarettes, and clothes. The female a 62 year old Sturgeon Bay women was arrested for Criminal Trespass To Dwelling after becoming uncooperative with Officers. This was the second time this past week Officers had made contact with the 62 year old female for doing similar activities. The two prior events resulted in the female being warned and brought home. The 62 year old female was transported to the Door County Jail and was incarcerated on Criminal Trespass To Dwelling.

Phone Scam Alert!


On Wednesday February 29, 2012 at 12:15 PM, Officers were dispatched to the Police Department for a Fraud complaint. Upon arrival the complainant told Officers that he had received phone calls from the following numbers 876-853-4022 and 876-898-1717 claiming he had won some money.  The caller who had a European accent stated in order for the complainant to get the money they needed to pay an unknown sum of money for processing fees.  The complainant unknowingly sent money to the suspect and the suspect continued to ask for more money. Eventually the complainant asked for the callers address and name and the caller hung up. Officers investigated the matter further and found multiple instances of scams like this online. Officers also found out that the area code being used by the two numbers that were used in the scam were from Jamaica.
