Suspect Flees Crash Scene
In the early morning hours of May 15, 2018 a Sturgeon Bay Police Officer saw a vehicle traveling with no headlights. The officer went to make a traffic stop on the vehicle, which began fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. Because of the rainy conditions at the time and number of residential houses in the area, the officer decided it was a safety risk and disengaged the pursuit.
The vehicle was then located crashed at the intersection of
North 7th Avenue and Colorado Place; it had struck a power pole. The
driver’s side door was open and airbags were deployed, but the subject fled the
scene.
The registered owner of the vehicle was called and told
officers the suspect did not have permission to take his vehicle. The suspect
was later caught and charged with operating without headlights, recklessly
endangering safety, unreasonable and imprudent speed, fail to stop at posted
stop sign, fleeing/eluding a police officer and fail to notify police of an
accident.

Thank You Walgreens!
The Sturgeon Bay Police Department wants to express our thanks to the associates at Walgreens for stopping a fraud incident on 05/14/2018!
A Sturgeon Bay Police Officer was dispatched to the Walgreens for a potential fraud incident. The officer got to Walgreens and encountered store employees and a Sturgeon Bay resident. Basically, one of our residents got a phone call from a person saying that her grandson is in jail and needs bail money. A member of our community was going to mail money, thinking it was going to her grandson’s bail.
Thankfully, Walgreens staff were able to identify this as fraud. We are happy to see that with the quick thinking of staff at Walgreens, the incident was prevented and no money was lost! This will never happen! No member of law enforcement will ever call you asking for bail money, or any money for that matter.
This is a common fraud/scam that we see in our community. If you receive a phone call from “law enforcement,” the “IRS,” or any other governmental organization asking for money… it’s a scam. As always, contact us at the Sturgeon Bay Police Department with any questions.

Blown Tire Marks Lead To Suspects Arrest
An officer attempted to make a routine traffic stop Saturday
night for speeding, however the driver had other intentions and fled at a high
rate of speed. During the pursuit the
suspect struck another vehicle and continued to elude officers. Given the speed and safety of the public, the
officers discontinued the pursuit. The
suspect blew a tire during the pursuit and was eventually located by the trail
of marks the rim left in the roadway leading to his residence. The trail of
marks led officers from 18th and Utah crossing the bridge to the west side of
Sturgeon Bay. The suspect was arrested for Operating While
Intoxicated 4th offense along with multiple other offenses. The Sturgeon Bay Police Department would like
to thank the bridge tender for contacting officers with information regarding
the suspect.

A Big Thank You
The
Sturgeon Bay Police Department wants to give a big THANK YOU to Julie Henry for
preventing a fraud incident that took place at the Pack and Ship in Sturgeon
Bay. Julie discovered that a couple was going to send over $9,000 in cash to
somebody. Julie contacted the police department, as this seemed odd. It was
discovered that a couple was going to send the money to a fraudulent person…
thankfully this was prevented.
It
should be noted that the Pack and Ship in Sturgeon Bay has prevented over
$55,000 in fraud. The Sturgeon Bay Police Department and Sturgeon Bay community
extends a huge thank you to Julie Henry and her assistant Megan Lautenbach for
all you do in preventing fraud within our community.

Be Mindful with Your Money
We want the public to be
aware of frauds and scams. These happen all over the state and country… and
even here in Sturgeon Bay. The Sturgeon Bay Police Department investigates many
fraud complaints. We’ve had quite a few fraud complaints this past week.
Be aware of scams. If
they seem too good to be true… it’s probably a scam. Some common ones we see
are people being contacted with individuals misrepresenting themselves to scam
people. Some of these include people pretending to be with the IRS, local police;
the Sheriff’s Department… the list goes on. As always, contact the police
department if something seems suspicious.

A Sturgeon Bay Police
Officer was dispatched to investigate a fraud complaint. A Sturgeon Bay
resident attempted to purchase two puppies online. During the course of the
exchange, the Sturgeon Bay resident sent around $1,000 to a fraudulent person.
Not only did the resident not get two puppies, but he lost $1,000.
Please be careful with these types of frauds. The majority of time when you are contacted for money, it is not true.

An officer was dispatched
to a local business to investigate a fraud complaint. A couple was sending
$9,400 to somebody they believed was an attorney. Basically, a Sturgeon Bay
resident was contacted by an “attorney” who explained his granddaughter was in
jail in Illinois and needed money to bail her out of jail. The fraudulent
caller actually put on a female voice, pretending to be his granddaughter. This
is a scam! Thankfully, a Sturgeon Bay Police Officer was able to stop this
transaction prior to the couple sending the money to this unknown person.
This is a scam. You will
not be contacted by anybody requesting money for a bail. We have seen past
incidents like this where fraudulent callers pretend to be with the local
Sheriff’s Department.

A Sturgeon Bay Police
Officer was dispatched to investigate a fraud complaint. A Sturgeon Bay
resident was contacted by somebody impersonating an officer with the social
security office. This “fake” officer told a Sturgeon Bay resident they had a
warrant for their arrest. Unfortunately, a Sturgeon Bay resident wired $9,000
to this “fake” officer then wired 4 more transactions. A total of $12,769.00
was wired and LOST! The resident also sent copies of her social security
number, bank account numbers, and copy of her driver’s license.
Please know that you will
never be contacted over phone to send money in regards to an arrest warrant.
This is simply not how law enforcement does business.
Please be careful with these types of frauds. The majority of time when you are contacted for money, it is not true.

Officer "J" Visits 4K
Officer Jennerjohn visited St. John Bosco's 4K classroom to speak with the youngsters on what it's like being a police officer. When asked if there were any questions....one little girl raised her hand and told Officer Jennerjohn she lost a tooth. No detective work was needed, as that was the Tooth Fairy's jurisdiction.
