REMINDER: Slow-No-Wake zone on Sturgeon Bay waters

Attention All Boaters:  City of Sturgeon Bay Municipal Ordinance 14.07 regulates the operation of boats on the waters of Sturgeon Bay that fall within the city limits. The ordinance defines slow-no-wake as a "speed at which a boat moves as slowly as possible while still maintain steerage control." Further information on the ordinance can be found at: Sturgeon Bay Slow-No-Wake

The below map shows the approximate area of the water that is designated as slow-no-wake.  This has been done to ensure the safety of marinas, shoreline and boaters.  Thank you to everyone for their cooperation in following this ordinance.

Have a safe and enjoyable boating season!!!

Remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice...

The Sturgeon Bay Police Department would like to remember and honor the memory of our Door County military service members who lost their lives in service to our country.

SBPD participating in Click It or Ticket

The Sturgeon Bay Police Department will join hundreds of other law enforcement agencies throughout Wisconsin for the annual Click It or Ticket safety belt enforcement campaign from May 22 to June 4.

Chief Arleigh Porter says, “Whether you’re a driver or a passenger, wearing a safety belt is the single most important step you can take to protect yourself every time you travel.”  The Department’s goal is to not write citations, but through education and enforcement, seat belt use will increase and we can prevent injuries and deaths.

Wisconsin’s safety belt use rate is at  88.4 percent, the highest ever, but nearly half of the drivers and passengers killed in Wisconsin traffic crashes last year were not wearing safety belts. In addition, last year there were over 68,500 convictions for failure to fasten a seat belt.

Buckling up protects yourself from being ejected during a crash or thrown violently around inside you vehicle.  Click It or Ticket is all about preventing injuries and saving lives!

Sturgeon Bay Welcomes New Officers

The Sturgeon Bay Police Department welcomes two new officers to the Department.  The positions fill vacancies created when Officer South left in December 2016 and the recent retirement of Sgt. Zager. Each officer is currently in the Department's Field Training Program, which lasts 14 weeks. Upon successful completion of field training, the officer moves to solo patrol, where they remain on probationary status for one year while undergoing further performance evaluations.

Officer Andrew Crabb started on April 3.  Officer Crabb grew up in Wausau, WI, and served in the US Navy from 2000-2007.  His time in the Navy included being a Marine Diesel Mechanic and being assigned to a Visit Board Search and Seizure Team.

Officer Crabb obtained an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice from Northcentral Technical College and a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration from Upper Iowa University.

Officer Crabb previously worked as a Police Officer for the Marathon City Police Department between 2009-2017.  He and his family chose to make Sturgeon Bay home because of the small town feel of the community and the outdoor activities the area offers.

Officer Luke Deibele began his service with Sturgeon Bay on April 17. Officer Deibele grew up in Kiel, WI, graduating from Roncalli High School in Manitowoc.  He went on to attend Marquette University obtaining a degree in International Affairs.

Officer Deibele came to us from Madison, where he was employed as a Sheriff Deputy for the Dane County Sheriff's Office from 2008-2017.  He enjoys learning new cultures and languages, and currently speaks fluent Spanish and German.  Officer Deibele's language skills will be an asset to the Department and community.

Officer Deibele wanted to get closer to family, and the geography and size of Sturgeon Bay was a perfect fit for him.  He says:
"I am very excited to be a member of this wonderful community.!"
Spanish: Yo estoy muy feliz ser un miembro de esta maravillosa comunidad!
German: Ich bin sehr glücklich, ein Mitglied von dieser wunderbaren Gemeinschaft zu sein!

SBPD Officers attend Memorial

Officer Derek Jennerjohn and Officer Andrew Crabb attended the 27th Annual Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony at the State Capital in Madison on Friday, May 19. The ceremony honors officers killed in the line of duty.  Three names were added to the Memorial this year.

Governor Walker spoke at the ceremony, saying, “From Beloit to the Apostle Islands, from Ellsworth to Washington Island – law enforcement officers all throughout our great state risk their lives every day to protect us from harm.  We owe all of our law enforcement officers sincere thanks every day for their selfless service. Today, however, we offer special, heartfelt thanks to those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for our safety by laying down their lives in the line of duty. We honor them, and keep their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers

At the May 16 City Council meeting,
Mayor Birmingham and the City Council issued a Proclamation to Chief Arleigh Porter recognizing Police Week and the service provided by SBPD.

Thank you to Sturgeon Bay High School Student Council for providing the department some treats and Mrs. Richard's 4th grade class at Sunrise Elementary School for some appreciation cards.

It's been an OWI week...

UPDATE: There is another OWI ...

On May 19, just before 1:00am,an officer identified a vehicle revving its engine and squealing its tires.  The vehicle drove behind Butch's Bar, where officers made contact with the 23 year old male driver from Michigan.  The driver smelled of alcohol and refused to conduct the requested field sobriety tests.  The driver was arrested for OWI-1st offense.  Additional citations were issued for disorderly conduct with a motor vehicle and unregistered auto.
___________________________________________________________________

On May 14 at 2:45am, officers were dispatched to 1st Ave at the Bay Shipbuilding gate for an unoccupied vehicle that struck the gate.  When the officer arrived on scene, another officer was dispatched to a vehicle theft complaint, where the caller stated his vehicle was taking from the Brick Lot.  Police made contact with the caller, a 32 year old male from Sturgeon Bay, who reported his vehicle had been stolen.  An investigation would reveal the vehicle had not been stolen and the male was driving the vehicle when it crashed into the fence.  The male was intoxicated and field sobriety tests indicated the male was impaired.  The male was arrested for OWI-2nd offense.  Additional citations were issued for hit and run, and failure to notify police of an accident.  The case will also be referred to the DA's Office for consideration of a criminal charge of Obstructing an Officer for lying to police and providing false information to mislead the investigation.

On May 14 at 9:15pm, police stopped a vehicle for a defective headlight.  The driver, a 53 year old female from Sturgeon Bay, had a strong odor of intoxicants.  Field sobriety tests showed impairment and she was arrested for OWI-1st offense.

On May 17 at 2:20am, police stopped a vehicle for not coming to a complete stop at a flashing red light, and the registered owner was found to have a revoked drivers license.  Contact was made with the driver and vehicle owner, a 31 year old female from Sturgeon Bay.  The driver reported to have an occupational license, but the DOT return did not show an occupational license had been issued.  The officer detected an odor of alcohol from the driver.  Field sobriety tests indicated impairment and the driver was arrested for 2nd offense OWI.  In addition, the driver was cited for Operating with a Revoked License and Failure to Install an IID
.

Congratulations Sgt. Zager!
