The
Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region in Green Bay
is announcing the new J-turn at the intersection of WIS 57 and County Road C in
Door County will be open for use by Saturday morning, Nov. 21. Construction
began September 14, 2015.
The
project involved constructing a J-turn intersection at WIS 57 and County Road C
to provide safer turning movements at the intersection. The J-turn does not
allow left-turn and through movements from County Road C. In order to make
these movements, drivers at County Road C have to first turn right then make a
U-turn approximately 1/3-mile down the road from the original intersection. For
more information regarding J-turn intersections, please see the J-turn webpage
at: www.wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/j-turn.aspx.

Reduce right-angle crashes by decreasing the number of conflict points.
Can often be retrofitted without acquiring additional land.
Lower cost alternative as compared to an interchange.
WisDOT built the first J-turn in 2011 to address multiple crashes on Highway 53 in Douglas County. There were eight injury crashes at the intersection in the five-year period prior to construction and zero since construction. Other J-turns were built in Brown County at WIS 29/County Road VV and Sheboygan County at WIS 23/County M in 2013.
