The Sturgeon Bay Police Department would like to remind all downtown visitors, this past winter, a new disabled parking stall was added on Michigan St, just before N 3rd Ave. The parking spot is the last one before the crosswalk in the picture, with the required signage on the lamp post. This action was approved by City Council at the November 1, 2016 meeting.
Recently, we have seen an increase in unauthorized vehicles parking in this stall, which has resulted in citations being issued. To use this stall, a vehicle must be displaying special registration vehicle plates or identification cards. State Statutes discuss this in:
346.505 Stopping, standing or parking prohibited in parking spaces reserved for vehicles displaying special registration plates or special identification cards.
We anticipate the Street Department will be painting this parking stall blue this spring to help motorists, as other similar stalls are painted in the city. However, the fact this stall lacks blue painting does not mean anyone can park in the stall and does not negate a driver's responsibility to be observant of traffic signs. State Statutes only require the parking space to be marked with an official traffic sign, and this parking space is clearly marked.
We thank everyone for their cooperation in following the disabled parking laws.
