SUMMER POLICE ACADEMY

•  August, 14^th, 15^th, and 16^th 2013 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Sturgeon Bay Police Department
• Open to children going into 8^th or 9^th grade who are residents of Door or Kewaunee Counties.
• Space is limited to the first 10 applicants
• Applications are due by August 5^th, 2013

This half-day “summer camp” style program, taught by Police Explorers, Community Service Officers, and Police Officers, will introduce children to police work, through presentations and hands-on activities.  During the program, children will:

• Get a tour of the Sturgeon Bay Police Department building and a police squad car.
• Listen to SWAT, SOT, and Marine Patrol officers discuss their jobs and see these officers’ equipment.
• Learn about traffic enforcement, conduct mock traffic stops with actual police cars, and use police radar to measure actual traffic speeds.
• Learn about traffic control and practice performing traffic control of cars under controlled conditions (in a blocked-off parking lot, cars driven by PD instructors).
• Learn about crime scene investigations and investigate mock crime scenes. 
• Participate in staged shoot/don’t shoot scenarios. 

A daily snack will be provided throughout the week of the program.  Each child will be provided with a T-Shirt to wear during the academy, and to keep after the academy is finished.  The cost of the program will be $10 per child, to cover the cost of the t-shirt and snacks.

Applications for the Summer Police Academy can be picked up at the Sturgeon Bay Police Department, Sturgeon Bay Parks Department, or the Algoma Police Department.

Craigslist Scam

On July 18, 2013 at 8:18 PM, Officers were dispatched to a residence on the east side of the Sturgeon Bay for a scam attempt. Upon arrival the complainant stated he had received a check in the mail for $2200.00 for an item he was selling on Craigslist. The check was much more than the complainant was asking for the item. A short time later the complainant received a text message asking if the complainant had received the check...the complainant didn't respond and contacted Police instead. It was determined the check was fraudulent.

2 Arrested For Assault

On July 16, 2013 at 12:12 AM, Officers were dispatched to a fight in progress in the 600 block of 12th avenue. Upon arrival Officers observed multiple individuals standing in the parking lot. After investigating the incident Officers found that two males had been fighting. One of the males was injured from the fight and was transported to Door County Medical Center.

Both 19 year old Sturgeon Bay men were arrested and transported to Door County Jail. One of the 19 year olds was jailed on Felony Substantial Battery and Disorderly Conduct. The other 19 year old was jailed on Disorderly Conduct and Battery.

Officers Investigate Criminal Damage To Property

On July 12, 2013 at 10 AM, Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of 4th avenue for Criminal Damage To Property. Upon arrival Officers found that someone overnight had walked in the freshly poured concrete. The two sets of footprints went for approximately 140 feet down the sidewalk. Officers found that there was almost $4000.00 worth of damage to the concrete.

Sturgeon Bay Man Arrested For Felony Charges After Disturbance

On July 12, 2013 at 11:17 PM, Officers were dispatched to a residence on Michigan Street for a disturbance. While on scene investigating the disturbance, Officers found an intoxicated 60 year old Sturgeon Bay man yelling profanities at a female who was sitting on the door step of the residence.

Upon making contact with the Sturgeon Bay man he attacked the first Officer by striking the Officer in the face. The Sturgeon Bay man was escorted to the ground by the Officer where he continued to resist Officers attempts to arrest him. After a short period of time the Sturgeon Bay man was arrested and transported to the Door County Jail where he was incarcerated on the following charges:

• Misdemeanor Domestic Disorderly Conduct.
• Misdemeanor Resisting Arrest.
• Felony Battery To A Police Officer.

Officers suffered minor lacerations and injuries as a result of the altercation.

Sturgeon Bay Man Arrested For OWI

On July 4, 2013 at 12:25 PM, Officers stopped a vehicle on the west side of Sturgeon Bay for a traffic offense. Upon making contact with the 46 year old driver, Officers found that the driver had been drinking. Officers administered Field Sobriety Tests (FSTS) to the driver, which the driver failed. Officers administered a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT), which indicated a .20 amount. Officers arrested the Sturgeon Bay man for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) and issued citations for possession of open intoxicants.

Million Dollar Phone Scam

On July 2, 2013 at 7:18 PM, Officers were dispatched to a residence on the west side of Sturgeon Bay for a phone scam. Upon arrival Officers found that the complainant had received multiple phone calls from a private phone number stating she had won 2.5 million dollars and a new car.  The complainant was told to go to Walmart to send a money order to the caller.  The complainant provided Officers with the contact number used by the caller, which was 1-866-996-5997. The complainant never sent any money as she had become suspicious and contacted Police.
