High Speed Chase Ends In Arrest

Last night around 1 AM, third shift Officers attempted to stop a white Ford Truck in the downtown area for a moving violation. The truck decided to not stop and attempted to flee the Officer.  A high speed chase ensued for a period of a few blocks before the truck crashed into a snowbank and shrubs. The driver fled on foot, but was later found and arrested for OWI and multiple other charges. A passenger in the vehicle was temporarily detained and may face charges as well. Sturgeon Bay Officers continue to investigate the incident.

Officer Birkholtz Laid To Rest

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEPav489KTk :Video of Funeral Procession

As I mentioned earlier The Sturgeon Bay Police Department had sent 6 of its members to the Funeral of slain Fond Du Lac Officer Birkholtz. Many of the Officers who attended the funeral were classmates or had gone to training with Craig or Officer Williams who was shot and wounded.

The day overall was a somber one yet absolutely amazing experience...for all Law Enforcement Officers involved. As the mile long procession of squad cars made its way to the Church and afterwards to the cemetery, families with young children lined the streets of Kenosha saluting and waiving American Flags. Some reports indicate there were 550 vehicles in the procession many holding 2 Officers, some had as many as 4. For about 3 hours maybe more traffic in the City of Kenosha was at a stand still yet no one was upset many of the drivers got out of their vehicles and began taking pictures and videoing the procession through town. The amazing show of support and generosity displayed by the public was heartwarming and something that was much needed after laying to rest a brother of ours, the 49th Officer killed this year Fond Du Lac Police Officer Craig Birkholtz.

Thoughts and Prayers Go Out To FDLPD Officer Killed In Line Of Duty!

The men and women of the Sturgeon Bay Police Department would like to express our heart felt condolences to our brothers and sisters in blue at the Fond Du Lac Police Department and their respective families. Law Enforcement is one big family and this news is very difficult for all of us as many of us have gone to training with the Officers who have been killed and injured in this incident.

Earlier today around 6 AM a man barricaded inside a home shot 2 Officers and a K9 with a high powered rifle. A standoff ensued where the SWAT team eventually found the man dead inside the home. We continue to pray for all of the Officers involved.

Crash On Bayview Bridge Causes Temporary Bridge Closure.

The Bayview Bridge was temporary closed as Officers investigated a two car crash on the draw of the Bayview Bridge. Around 4 PM Officers were alerted to a two vehicle crash on the Bayview Bridge. Upon arrival Officers determined that a series of vehicles were slowing down and pulling off to the side of the bridge as an ambulance was travelling southbound with its lights and siren activated. Due to the vehicles in front coming to a sudden stop the last vehicle in the series wasn’t able to stop in time thus crashing into the vehicle in front of it.  Both vehicles sustained damage and had to be towed away.  As a result of the crash the driver whose vehicle had been struck was transported to Door County Medical Center with minor injuries.

Background:

In July, 2008 the family of Terrance Lee Schram (09-12-1955) approached the Sturgeon Bay Police Department asking for assistance in locating their son, Terrance. Although Terrance is not actually missing from Sturgeon Bay, we agreed to help because of the unusual circumstances of this case. Terry's last conversation with his family was by phone, in late 1981. At that time Terry was AWOL (Absent without leave) from the U.S. Navy, he had been declared a deserter. To achieve desertion status you have to be AWOL, for a period greater than 30 days. Terry told his family during the call that he was in Florida, and that he was thinking of turning himself into the Navy. This was the last time Terry has been heard from. His family does not know where he was in Florida when he called, therefore they have been unable to generate any interest by Florida authorities because they have no known location where he last was. At the time of his disappearance, Terry was a crew member on the U.S.S. Saratoga out of Philadelphia, PA. How he traveled to Florida is not known. Terry has been entered into NCIC as an Endangered Missing Adult.

Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to contact Lt. Thomas J. Baudhuin at the Sturgeon Bay Police Department at (920) 746-2459.  Additional information concerning Terrance Lee Schram can be found at the website for the National Center for Missing Adults [National Center For Missing Adults] and at our website www.sturgeonbaypolice.com  As always with any investigation you may use the Confidential Web Tip Form to submit any information you might have[Confidential Web Tip Form].

Roadways Slippery and Snow Covered...Use Caution When Driving!

The snow started falling around 4:45 AM this morning in Sturgeon Bay. The roadways are rapidly becoming snow covered and slippery. Due to the temperature being a few degrees above freezing the snow will accumulate much faster on the roadways due to the heaviness of the snow.  For your morning commute to work and school expect  reduced visibilities and overall hazardous travel conditions.  About 4 to 7 inches of snow is predicted to fall in Door County.  Please give yourself extra time when driving today and drive safely.
