Sturgeon Bay Police & Door County Sheriff Release Septembers’s HVE Results

The Sturgeon Bay Police Department and the Door County Sheriff’s Department have completed their fifth and final month of participation in their 2012 Seat belt High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) Deployment, which is funded through a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety. In September, there were eight deployments covering the days of September 2, 3, 7, 9, 15, 24 and 28.

Those deployments produced the following results:

  • 275 traffic stops were made during the deployments that covered 32 hours.
  • 200 traffic citations were issued: 142 Seatbelt
  • 27 Speeding
  • 2 OWI (operate while intoxicated)
  • 4 OAR (operate after revocation) and OWS (operate while suspended)
  • 2 Vehicle registration
  • 23 Miscellaneous violations (i.e.: stop sign / no insurance)
  • 142 traffic warnings were issued: 93 Speeding
  • 11 Vehicle registration
  • 9 Vehicle equipment
  • 29 Miscellaneous violations
  • 4 non-traffic arrests from the stops: 1 Possession of marijuana
  • 1 Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • 1 Possession of illegally obtained prescription
  • 1 warrant out of Kewaunee County
Of special note are the two OWI arrests, of which one was a 2nd offense violation and the other a felony 4th offense violation. Both of these traffic stops were a result of the drivers not wearing seatbelts and/or speeding, with the violations occurring between 4:30 - 5:30pm.

As for the driver who was arrested for 2nd offense OWI, the stop resulted in the detection of illegal drugs as well. In addition to the OWI charge, the driver was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of illegally obtained prescription.

An unrelated traffic stop resulted in the identification of an occupant in a vehicle to have an outstanding warrant out of Kewaunee County. That occupant was arrested and taken to jail on a $495.50 warrant, and held for Kewaunee County.
