Advance America Scam
On February 16, 2013 at 11:20 AM, Officers were dispatched to the Police Department for a suspicious complaint. Upon arrival Officers met with the complainant who states she received a phone call from a Richard Steele from 404-996-1939. The man stated he was a lawyer investigating bad checks issued by her and wanted her to pay him to resolve the matter. The complainant refused to do so and the man stated an arrest warrant would be issued for her arrest. The complainant was advised by Officers that this was a scam and to not send any money to the man.
The Sturgeon Bay Police Department would like to remind everyone to never send money to anyone without knowing the person who you are sending it to. Make sure to never give out sensitive information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, or banking information over the phone unless you are positive you know who you are talking to is legitimate. Never hesitate to contact Police if you have questions or concerns over phone calls you are receiving.
