Readers Digest Phone Scam
On February 11, 2013 at 3:15 PM, Officers were dispatched to a fraud call on Memorial Drive. Upon arrival Officers were advised about a phone scam. The complainant states she received a phone call from a man named Mr. Brown. Mr. Brown had called from a private number and had stated to the complainant that she had won $250 Million dollars from Readers Digest. In order to receive those funds the complainant needed to obtain $350.00 gift card from Walmart and to contact Mr. Brown at 876-865-8214 after receiving the card.
The complainant went to Walmart to purchase the gift card, but Walmart informed the complainant that this was a scam and they wouldn't fulfill her request. Officers were contacted soon after and determined this was indeed a scam. Thankfully Walmart did the right thing in telling their customers of the scam as the complainant could have been out $350.00 and possible much more money.
As always if it sounds too good to be true it probably is! Contact Police if you have any questions reference suspicious calls, mail, or any other incidents at 920-746-2450.
