An Expensive Nap

On April 18, a 34 year old intoxicated male fell asleep on a lobby couch while waiting for a cab at a local hotel.  The employees were unable to wake him when the cab arrived.  Eventually the male woke up and urinated on the couch and carpet.  The staff asked the male to stop, but he wouldn’t.  At 2:49 AM, officers were dispatched to the lobby and spoke with the male who did not recall the events that took place.  The individual was cited with two city ordinances for “Disorderly Conduct” and “Urination/On Property/In Public”.

IRS Phone Scam

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and business owners with threats like arrest or loss of business if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said. They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card or money order.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all.  The agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its website or call 800-366-4484.  Only contact your local police department if you have provided funds and need a report. 

 

Vehicle Plates and Registration

The Department of Motor Vehicles, which is located at 1009 Egg Harbor Road, is open Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00am to 5:00pm.  Unfortunately they do not physically handle license plate or title transfers, temporary license plates, or license plate renewals.   They will however have the necessary paperwork that can be completed and mailed in.   For questions, you may contact the Wisconsin DOT at 608-264-7447. 

If you are looking to renew your license plates and receive your new sticker, you may stop by the customer service counter at Econo Foods and Pick N Save.   Both businesses have the stickers to provide after the renewal is processed.   Another option besides mailing in your payment, go to the website www.dot.wisconsin.gov.

The Sturgeon Bay Police Department can provide license plate stickers for vehicles that are already registered.  Unfortunately, we do not process renewals or temporary license plates. 

 

Off Duty Officers Assist In OWI Traffic Stop

 

On April 11, 2015, off duty officers witnessed a vehicle crossing the centerline numerous times, almost making contact with parked vehicles.  The vehicle almost struck the vehicle of the off duty officer while backing up in the lane of traffic due to missing a turn.  The officer contacted an officer on duty regarding the vehicle.  At 11:30 PM, the responding officer made contact with the 58 year old male.   Upon making contact with the driver, he admitted to drinking and consuming a 12 pack of beer.   The driver was cited for “Operating while under the Influence 4th” and transported to the Door County Jail. 

Traffic Stop 3rd Offense

On April 15, 2015 at 8:20 PM, an officer made contact with a 33 year old male while conducting a traffic stop for a defective/broken tail light on Jefferson Street at North 7^th Avenue. The subject provided a Mexico ID card and found to not have a valid license in the United States.  He has been cited before for operating without a valid license.  The subject was cited for “Operating without a Driver’s License 3^rd offense” and “Operating a motor vehicle without Insurance”.     The driver was arrested and transported to the Door County Jail, where he was booked and later released.  The subject was given a ride to his residence. 

Animal Abuse

 

On April 14, 2015, an individual reported seeing a lady place kittens in the garbage on South Duluth Avenue.   The officer spoke with the complainant who informed him that her daughter actually witnessed the lady placing the kittens in the garbage.  The officer made contact with the 58 year old female suspect, who indicated the feline gave birth to four kittens and one was stillborn.  She later admitted to drowning the three live kittens, as she could not afford to care for them or afford the surrendering fee at the Human Society.   The kittens were placed in a metal container in the garbage.  The officer contacted the County Humane Officer who informed the officer per the American Veterinary Association guidelines, drowning was not considered a humane method of euthanasia.  The suspect is being referred to the District Attorney’s office for consideration of three charges of “Mistreatment of Animals”.
