New J-turn at WIS 57 and County Road C opens in Door County

Intersection safety improvement began September 14

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region in Green Bay is announcing the new J-turn at the intersection of WIS 57 and County Road C in Door County will be open for use by Saturday morning, Nov. 21. Construction began September 14, 2015.

The project involved constructing a J-turn intersection at WIS 57 and County Road C to provide safer turning movements at the intersection. The J-turn does not allow left-turn and through movements from County Road C. In order to make these movements, drivers at County Road C have to first turn right then make a U-turn approximately 1/3-mile down the road from the original intersection. For more information regarding J-turn intersections, please see the J-turn webpage at: www.wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/j-turn.aspx. An informational graphic is also attached below.

Benefits of J-turns include:

Reduce right-angle crashes by decreasing the number of conflict points.

Can often be retrofitted without acquiring additional land.

Lower cost alternative as compared to an interchange.

WisDOT built the first J-turn in 2011 to address multiple crashes on Highway 53 in Douglas County. There were eight injury crashes at the intersection in the five-year period prior to construction and zero since construction. Other J-turns were built in Brown County at WIS 29/County Road VV and Sheboygan County at WIS 23/County M in 2013.

Officers Investigating Thefts From Vehicles

Officers have been taking multiple reports of thefts from vehicles in the last week or so. The thefts had occurred throughout the city. The majority of thefts could have been prevented by locking the vehicle. Officers remind citizens to contact law enforcement when they hear or see anything suspicious going on in their neighborhoods. Officers also remind citizens to follow these tips when leaving items in vehicles:

  • Keep Your Valuables Out of Sight
The best way to prevent theft from your auto is to always keep valuables out of sight. Never leave cell phones, briefcases, suitcases, or electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, laptop computers, etc.) in your car in plain view. Take these items with you, or secure them—all the time, every time.
  • Secure Your GPS Device While many GPS devices are mounted in the dashboard of the vehicle, the SBPD encourages anyone who uses a portable GPS device to take it with you, along with any other items of value, when you park the car.
  • Use Your Trunk If your car has a trunk, use it. Put valuables in there or in a locked glove compartment. Hiding items under seats is better than leaving them in plain view, but securing them inside the glove compartment or trunk is a far better deterrent.
  • Don't Tempt Thieves with New Purchases During the holiday season especially, or any time you’re shopping, place packages in the trunk, not on the passenger seats or floors.
  • Remove Your Radio Faceplate
If you can unfasten your sound system and take it with you, or lock it in your trunk, do so. And don’t forget to do the same with your CDs and tapes.
  • Lock It Up
Also, keep your car doors and windows locked—all the time!

Trick or Treat Hours and Safety Reminders

Halloween is Saturday, October 31, 2015. Trick or Treating hours will be from 3PM to 6PM. We urge all who are trick or treating to follow some of these brief safety tips:
  1. Be familiar with the neighborhood you trick or treat in. Go only to homes with a light on.
  2. Go in pairs. There is safety in numbers.
  3. Look both ways before crossing the street.
  4. Make sure your child's costume can be easily seen at night. Decorate it with reflective tape so motorists and others can easily see them.
  5. Try to avoid having the child wear a mask with their costume or make sure the mask allows them to have a complete field of vision. Most masks limit the child's ability to see well and could be a factor in causing them to trip or run into low objects.
  6. Don’t eat candy that is not securely wrapped, or better yet, have a parent or older brother or sisters inspect the candy before eating it.
  7. Motorists please remember to watch out for frequent pedestrian traffic.
We hope everyone has a safe and "spooktacular" Halloween!

IRS Phone Scam

During the past few weeks Officers have received calls from citizens in the community who have been receiving phone calls from the IRS. During some of the calls the scammers claim to be from the IRS and attempt to intimidate or threaten citizens that if they don't pay immediately they will send the police to your house. Rest assured when you hang up on these individuals we will not be coming to your house.

Additionally another method used by the scammers are a computerized voicemail that claims to be the IRS and asks you to contact them. This is also a scam.

Feel free to hang up on these individuals and never give out sensitive information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, or banking information over the phone unless you are positive you know who you are talking to is legitimate.

Lastly if the IRS does want to get a hold of you they will do it via the United States Postal Service.
