Sturgeon Bay Man Arrested After Leading Officers On Chase

On January 2, 2013 at 1:16 PM, Officers were dispatched to a residence on the west side of Sturgeon Bay for a Suicide Attempt. Upon arrival Officers were advised by the complainant that a 42 year old Sturgeon Bay man had just left the residence and had consumed numerous pills in an attempt to kill himself.  Officers checked the surrounding area for the man and found the man inside his vehicle on Strawberry Lane. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle in order to check on the mans welfare, but the man refused to stop.

During the pursuit Officers attempted to lay spike strips three different times in order to deflate the vehicles tires, but the man avoided the spike strips each time. Due to the mans condition, reckless driving, and as the pursuit continued the man began to drive back towards the City, Officers decided to conduct a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver on the vehicle.  The PIT maneuver intentionally causes the suspect vehicle to spin out of control. Officers conducted the PIT maneuver on Geier Road and were successful at safely stopping the vehicle.

The 42 year old Sturgeon Bay man was arrested on multiple charges and was transported to Door County Medical Center for treatment of his medical condition caused by ingesting multiple pills. No Officers or Deputies were injured in the incident, but two squads sustained minor damage to them.

Due to the use of the PIT maneuver and the two vehicles coming into contact an accident investigation is being conducted by the Door County Sheriffs Department as the incident occurred in their jurisdiction.
