In the early morning hours of May 15, 2018 a Sturgeon Bay Police Officer saw a vehicle traveling with no headlights. The officer went to make a traffic stop on the vehicle, which began fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. Because of the rainy conditions at the time and number of residential houses in the area, the officer decided it was a safety risk and disengaged the pursuit.
The vehicle was then located crashed at the intersection of
North 7th Avenue and Colorado Place; it had struck a power pole. The
driver’s side door was open and airbags were deployed, but the subject fled the
scene.
The registered owner of the vehicle was called and told
officers the suspect did not have permission to take his vehicle. The suspect
was later caught and charged with operating without headlights, recklessly
endangering safety, unreasonable and imprudent speed, fail to stop at posted
stop sign, fleeing/eluding a police officer and fail to notify police of an
accident.
