Fraudulent Tax Return Complaints


Over the past few weeks Officers have taken numerous complaints about tax returns being rejected by the Internal Revenue System (IRS) due to social security numbers being stolen. This is a common problem during tax time and as of last year its reported that the IRS has sent out billions of dollars worth of fraudulent returns. If you are victim of this type of fraud here are a few tips to follow:

  1. Contact the IRS and explain your situation to them. 
  2. Contact the Social Security Administration and explain your situation to them. 
  3. Request credit reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, and then set up a fraud alert. 
  4. File a Police Report with the Sturgeon Bay Police Department. 
  5. Contact the Federal Trade Commission and submit an ID theft complaint https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/
