Phone Scam Alert!

On May 1, 2012 at 7:38 PM, Officers were dispatched to 800 block of Louisiana Street for a Fraud complaint. Upon arrival Officers met with the complainant who stated she had received a phone call regarding man who claimed to be her grandson. The caller stated she had won a trip to Madrid, Spain via a radio giveaway.

During the conversation the caller who claimed to be her grandson stated he was arrested by Police and was innocent and needed her help. The call was then transferred to a Sergeant Stanley Walker who stated in order to assist her grandson she needed to wire transfer money to Spain for his bail.

Over the next few days the complainant states she received calls from the grandson making sure the money had been wired. The grandson then called again stating he had been jumped prior to getting to the US Embassy and his passports were stolen. The grandson transferred the complainant back to Sergeant Walker who told her she needed to wire additional money so that her grandson could get new passports. Over $5000.00 was wired via Western Union to the unknown person.

As always if it sounds too good to be true or if the situation sounds too far fetched...it probably is! As always contact Police if you ever have any questions reference suspicious calls, mail, or any other incidents at 920-746-2450.
